What is a Bitcoin exchange?

In this video I ask Rodrigo what exactly is a Bitcoin exchange. I also ask Rodrigo how people enable or participate or use a Bitcoin exchange. Rodrigo says that a Bitcoin exchange works just like a regular stock exchange in many ways.

The way an exchange works is there is an escrow element where to transfer funds, the funds are taken and put into an escrow account. After the product is delivered from the person who is supposed to receive the funds to the person who is paying, the funds are taken out of the escrow account, and given to the person who delivered the item.

A bitcoin exchange is more efficient than trading dollars because it is much faster, and the escrow element works more efficiently. Rodrigo gives the example that a Bitcoin is less like a stock exchange, and maybe more like an eBay.
